The Exact White Oak Kitchen Cabinet Stain Formula I Used

If you have been following along on my home design journey, you already know my love for my white oak kitchen cabinets. And if you’re like so many who have asked for the exact kitchen cabinet stain formula I used, today is your lucky day. I finally tracked down the formula details straight from the guy who originally stained them for my cabinet makers at Carriage House Mill.

Let’s just say, it took a little detective work.

The Story Behind the Custom White Oak Kitchen Cabinet Stain

When I selected the color for my kitchen cabinets, it was simply labeled “Field Elm” on the sample board. But here’s the twist: that name doesn’t actually exist in any store as a stain color. It was fully custom. Yep, not something you can just grab off the shelf at your local hardware store.

And since I’ve never stained wood a day in my life (and have zero plans to try it anytime soon), I highly recommend showing these details to a professional who can get it just right for you.

My Custom White Oak Kitchen Cabinet Stain Formula

This makes a 1/2 gallon of stain:

  • Mix the following with a clear base stain:
    • Titanium White (4257-T7590): 2160
    • Yellow Oxide (844-9955): 64
    • Lamp Black (844-1863): 2.4

How to Apply the Stain

If you or your professional are ready to get to work, here are the application steps we followed:

  1. Wipe the stain on the wood using a rag.
  2. Wipe off any excess stain with a clean, dry rag.
  3. Apply a clear coat over the stain.
  4. Let it dry for 10 minutes.
  5. Lightly scuff the surface using super fine sandpaper.
  6. Wipe a second coat of stain on.
  7. Wipe off excess with a clean, dry rag.

That’s it!

A Word of Advice Before You Start

As much as I wish I could answer every technical question about my kitchen cabinet stain formula, I’m going to be really honest: I’m not your girl for that. This is definitely a situation where talking to an expert who works with stains and cabinetry is worth every penny.

But hopefully, having the formula in hand gives you a solid starting point for your own white oak kitchen cabinet dreams.

Why I Love My White Oak Kitchen Cabinets

Choosing white oak was one of the best design decisions we made. The soft warmth of the wood, the subtle grain pattern, and the custom stain formula came together to create a timeless, clean, and elevated look that feels both cozy and sophisticated.

I get asked about them regularly, and for good reason: they work beautifully in both modern and traditional kitchens. Whether you’re building new or refreshing your existing kitchen, a custom white oak stain like this can make all the difference.

Wrapping It Up

So there you have it: the exact custom stain formula behind my white oak kitchen cabinets. If you decide to tackle this project, I’d love to hear how it turns out (and seriously, call a pro!).
